Sonu Nigam Takes Twitter Jibe Seriously And Shaves His Head

After the Twitter uproar on Sonu Nigam’s impertinent tweets about the Azaan from the mosques disturbing his sleep, an offended Bengal cleric announced a sum of Rs 10 lakhs (about $1500)  to anyone who shaved the singer’s head. This challenge was indeed taken seriously by Mr Nigam, who summoned his hairstylist, a Muslim, to shave his hair off. A tweet by the singer confirmed the same. He had also invited the media to witness his decision.

The Bengal-based cleric, Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, stated with contempt that “If anyone can shave [Sonu Nigam’s] hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country, I personally announce an award of Rs 10 lakh for that person.” Although this statement by the person was too harsh and rude, the way it was responded to by the famous singer was indeed intimidating. Sometimes it seems that being vocal about your perceptions on social media does more harm than good!

After this huge step by the singer, he gave an explanation clarifying that he did not call the Azaan a disturbance, but the loudspeakers at the mosques that blared the prayers, causing problem to the public, as an act of “forced religiousness” and “gundagardhi”. Furthermore, he declared that he took this extreme step in acceptance to the challenge of the Maulvi and to prove to him that he was not making anti-Muslim remarks, but a general statement which applies to temples and Gurudwaras alike. The disappointed singer had also mentioned that “It’s not an agitation, not a challenge that I am throwing someone’s way. I am shaving my head just to show that the person cutting my hair is a Muslim. It’s all about interpreting things the right way.”

Even after the singer shaved his hair off, the Maulvi declared, unnerved, that the said amount will be awarded only when the singer complied to his other two demands.

All in all this entire incident was an unnecessary jibe on social media, where a loose comment or personal agitation of a person stirred the entire nation that attacked the famous singer with fury and offense. Sonu Nigam’s tweets were answered with harsh comments by many citizens of the country. Even the famous Punjabi singer, Mika Singh, suggested that Mr. Nigam should consider relocating to a different area rather than complaining about the blaring loudspeakers.

So what can we gather from this hyped incident? You need to be subtle even while sharing your woes on the social media, as you never know when your words will be met with the world’s rage rather than compassion! Does this new statement from Mr. Nigam warrant forgiveness, or is he now trying to improve his recently acquired reputation? Let us know what you think!
