American Born Desi Comics Bring Independence Day Laughs

American Born Desi Comics
Stand up comedians Akaash Singh, Alingon Mitra, KC Arora, and Tushar Singh will be performing as the American Born Desi Comics on August 15th at Carolines on Broadway.  The event marks the first all-Desi lineup to perform at the famous comedy club on India’s Independence Day.
August 15th marks the 70th anniversary of India’s independence, and while the brown girls and brown boys who grew up outside of the subcontinent may not know how to celebrate, these four South Asian Americans in New York City are hoping to provide the answer: with laughter!
Now don’t take this as an amateur comedy hour. All of these comedians are professionals with high television credits!

ABCD Poster

Our doe eyed Akaash can be recognized from HBO’s The LeftoversWild N Out, Guy Code; Safeword on MTV and Netflix’s Brown Nation. Born and raised in Texas, he is quickly working his way up to becoming a household name. You just need to be brave enough to rise to his challenges!

Our sincere boy, Alingon has performed on Conan, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Last Comic Standing and has also written for The Daily Showwith Trevor Noah and Adam Ruins Everything. Winner of Boston Comedy Festival and the Funniest Comic in New England; beware of his tight jokes, original thoughts, and affable presence.

Our business tycoon, Tushar has been on Fox’s Laughs. While living in LA he co-created Unnecessary Evil – a weekly comedy showcase at the Westside Comedy Theatre in Santa Monica, which is hailed as one of the 10 Best New Stand-Up Shows in L.A., by LA Weekly.

And our cool nut, KC was recently featured on AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live.  He was a part of the viral web series and advertisement campaign for Optimum’s The UnMovers and was also seen on SeeSo’s New York’s Funniest and TruTV’s Late Night Snack.

In addition, the show will feature a special secret guest known from Netflix and Comedy Central.

As India becomes a septuagenarian and further crystallizes its own identity, those who live in America but have a hyphenated existence (read Desi-American) also look to create a coherent identity. Through jokes and insights, the ABDCs are hoping to help give a voice and an identity to those who lived through the first-generation experience. You might not realize it, though, since you’ll be laughing too hard!
