Barely a day after we celebrated the World Mental Health Day and glorified our understanding of mental health issues, the shocking news of this three-year-old Indian girl who has developmental issues and has gone missing from her home in Texas has rocked our world.
Adopted from an orphanage in India about two years ago by her parents, Sini and Wesley Matthews hailing from Kerala, this little girl is today in immediate and grave danger.
Last seen on Saturday morning, the police department is working frantically with the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, the FBI, the US Marshals and various other voluntary and police departments to look for Sherin.
The Texas Child Protective Services had now also placed Sherin’s four-year-old sister in protective custody.
It seems like a cruel joke when we talk about mental health issues in such a scenario. Whose mental health are we talking about anyways? What has greater consequences?
The known developmental issues of this little girl or the undisclosed mental health issues of the father who sent his daughter outside their home at 3 AM in the morning. The father has even confessed that he knew that coyotes had been sighted in the area. But maybe he didn’t think that was important.
By 3.15 AM when he checked, Sherin was missing from under the tree that she had been ordered to stand. This did not bother the father. He believed she would come back. So he went ahead and did a load of laundry. He did not care.
The mother apparently was sleeping throughout and did not know anything about the whole event till the next day morning. The father contacted the police only around 8 AM.
The child had already been missing for five hours.
It is astonishing how a parent can be so casual when his child goes missing in the middle of the night and not raise an immediate alarm. Though he was arrested and charged with abandoning and endangering the child he has now been released on a bond of $250,000.
I can’t truly decide if he is fit to be a parent.
We hope Sherin is found safe and sound.
Please pray and spread the word.
