The year is coming to a close and how can we resist but look at the Bollywood movies which stole our hearts this year!
1. Kaabil
It is a fine example of how a hackneyed plot and age-old masala can be reinvented and presented in a gripping manner for the current generation. Kudos to Rakesh Roshan, Sanjay Gupta, his writers and of course Hrithik Roshan to pull it off in such an interesting manner that it becomes such an engrossing watch even with such an old plot.
2. Jolly LLB 2
2017 was a year of sequels and this sequel of hit courtroom drama Jolly LLB (2013), was arguably the best sequel of the year in Bollywood. Akshay Kumar was in terrific form and his popularity ensured that the film had the cash registers ringing as well. Huma Qureshi and Kumud Mishra were apt in their roles.
3. Tiger Zinda Hai
This sequel to Salman Khans big hit Ek Tha Tiger (2012) is one of the top grossing Bollywood movies of 2017. The film does make reference to the real-life Indian nurses’ hostage crisis by ISIS and one thing is for sure after a fuse Tubelight – SALMAN KHAN IS BACK!!
4. Golmaal Again
This 4th installment of the successful series of Ajay Devgan – Rohit Shetty and team is the biggest hit of the year. This Diwali release had all the familiar faces and contents of the Golmaal franchise and also had a slight mysterious horror touch to it.
5. Toilet Ek Prem Katha
Akshay Kumar in a desi avatar is on a roll. This Shree Narayan Singh film is loosely inspired by a true incident and the setting of rural Uttar Pradesh makes it realistic as well as entertaining. The issue of ladies toilet or the lack of it has been very well shown and the performances by Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pedenkar makes up for the few loose ends in the script.
6. Hindi Medium
The movie carries both funny moments and dramatic scenes with an equal amount and ace actor Irrfan excels in both. He is well supported by Pakistani actress Saba Qamar and Deepak Dobriyal.
7. Raees
This film belonged to Shah Rukh Khan. He played a very different role from the Rajs’ and Rahuls’ and though a gangster his portrayal was very different from Baazigar and Don. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is excellent in his part as the police officer and Mahira Khan made her debut in India to raving reviews.
8. Bareilly Ki Barfi
Films based in smaller towns of India are getting pan India acceptance, and Bareilly Ki Barfi is the biggest example in this genre. Ayushman Khurana and Kriti Sanon are in terrific form and fit their roles to perfection. However, to be fair the film belongs to Raj Kumar Rao who simply gives a knockout performance.
9. Secret Superstar
Aamir Khan returns as a producer with this tenderly crafted Diwali release of the year. This simple film is about the dreams of a talented Muslim girl, who wants to be a singer much against the wishes of her father. This Advait Chavan film stars Zaira Wasim in the lead and she performs with utmost sincerity.
10. The Ghazi Attack
Sankalp Reddy directed Hindi-Telugu bilingual The Ghazi Attack is the ultimate Indian navy film. The script has enough twist and turns to keep one glued and the young director Sankalp manages a tight grip on the script and gives us many nail-biting moments. Kay Kay Menon and Rana Dagubatti excel in their parts.
