A Recap Of 2017 For Birthday Boy AR Rahman


Today is the birthday of the Mozart of Madras – Allah Rakha Rahman (former name Dileep) and the music wizard completes 51 years. AR Rahman has been the biggest thing in Indian film music since last 25 years and this Academy and Grammy award winner continues to be an inspiration for all music composers.
This internationally acclaimed and popular music director continues to leave his impact in Hindi, Tamil cinema besides doing international assignments as well. 2016 wasn’t a great year as such for Rahman, but 2017 saw him give us some of his best music yet! Let us look at 2017 through the works of Rahman:
1. Kaatru Velliyidai
The year 2017, brought Rahman back with his mentor Mani Ratnam. A strong message which Rahman gave with the film is that even with his international celebrity status and assignments, he remains loyal to his roots – Tamil cinema.
2. Sachin: A Billion Dreams
No documentary has got so much popularity in India than this gem on master blaster cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. This 2017 acclaimed docu-drama directed by James Erskine had all the ingredients for an interesting watch and Rahman’s score was instrumental in bringing the perfect emotional effects.
3. Viceroy’s House
Gurwinder Chadha’s much-acclaimed movie on the partition of India was another big international success for Rahman. His soulful music formed the crux of this movie.
4. Mersal
Though the Hindi films Rahman did in 2017 were lukewarm, but this Tamil action movie was a huge blockbuster. This Vijay masala flick was a roaring hit and along with its entertainment quotient, Rahman again proved he rules the music world.
5. Le Musk
Rahman is not the one to rest on his laurels and in 2017 he went ahead and directed his first film, the international production Virtual Reality film, Le Musk. A really brave debut as a director, the movie uses smell for an enhanced immersive experience. The preview of Le Musk was shown at, Las Vegas in a room with specialized chairs.
