Did #BoycottNRA Just Create A Chink In NRA’s Armor?
Following the #BoycottNRA movement, Delta and United, two of the world’s largest airlines, followed shortly by car rental giants Avis, Hertz and Enterprise, the Best Western hotel chain, the global insurance company MetLife, Eden Prairie-based Starkey Hearing Technologies and more than a dozen other corporations that used to contract, partner or otherwise affiliate with the National Rifle Association (NRA) are cutting their ties with it.
This is directly in support of the organized movement for gun control laws by the student-led organization, “Never Again MSD”. The student group advocates for stricter gun laws in wake of the horrific shooting massacre at their school- Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
They are being relentless in ensuring that this episode is not repeated and they are no longer the voiceless victims. They want to put an end to the NRA-sponsorship ruled politics, which prevents tighter gun laws leading to increasing massacres at public places, including schools.
On Tuesday, the survivors of the Florida massacre met in-person with both the Democratic and Republican leaders across Capitol, to voice their concern. But, House Speaker Paul Ryan stated that the lawmakers would focus on the failures of the law enforcement agencies rather than tighter gun regulations, which are violative of the second amendment rights of gun owners!
Earlier this week President Trump blamed the school massacre on the failure of law enforcement and said he probably would have run into school unarmed. On Wednesday in an hour-long bipartisan White House Meeting, President Trump questioned the stance of his own party and stunned everyone by backing for stricter gun control. He asked for a bipartisan solution on the issue and suggested incentive-based background check for public agencies. He also shocked some of the supporters of the second amendment when he said that in some cases law enforcement should be allowed to “Take the guns first, go through due process second”!
While it might appear that the President is in support of tighter gun control at present, there is no guarantee of a follow through. In January 2018 the President called for a bipartisan solution the DACA Reforms and it all fell through when all 4 bills failed to acquire the votes!
Many are equating the #NeverAgain movement to the #MeToo campaign, as the voice of the voiceless victims fighting to bring a revolutionizing change grows louder. The #BoycottNRA movement by the corporations is a small chink in the armor of the NRA. The change at the legislation level is a different ball-game and the student-activists need to gear-up for the relentless, aggressive battle against the giant NRA backed up by their own Congressmen.
