With an influx of South Asian diaspora into the West, the North American global desi is now a substantial audience comprised of ethnically South Asian but experientially Western populations. This youth demographic is constantly on the lookout for cultural and entertainment experiences that cater to their particular East meets West identities. desiFEST is just this kind of an offering.
Now in its 13th year, this South Asian music festival will feature a number of programs such as BollyEDM, an open stage to showcase new talents, and a networking event for artists. desiFEST itself is a music festival which will take place across a non-stop twelve-hour period in a celebration of diversity.
Headlining the event will be the rapper, singer, and songwriter, Raja Kumari who is becoming something of a household name; along with Jaz Dhami, who has conquered the music world through his dedication for more than a decade becoming the much sought after bhangra-hip hop fusing vocalist. Other artists will include Nani, Zzen – a band which infuses Indian folk music with rock inflections, the genre-blending XD Pro Music, and many more.
It’s an all-star cast of musicians to bring you beats that are genre-bending, combining Western and Asian influences resulting in new sounds.
The music festival will be supplemented by an outdoor food market featuring South Asian delicacies. You can treat yourself to street food such as sweet and sour chaat, South Indian snacks like sizzling dosas and, of course, the quintessential Indian curries.
Old favorites such as pizza and ice cream will also be available to sample. There will also be a Kids Zone for family-friendly fun for the whole kiddie gang and engaging activities for everyone with exciting giveaways.
Festival-goers can look forward to DJs, celebrity hosts, and motivational dancers. The wide array of musicians will bring a huge selection of vibrant moods with their talent. The performances promise to be theatrical and fantastic. Stay tuned for the truly colorful celebration.
Make sure you are there at Younge-Dundas Square on June 8th, 2019!
