As a Pakistani, it has been an honor for me to wake up to the news that a Jordanian Magazine, ‘The Muslim 500,’ nominated the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, as the Man of the Year. Moreover, he has been named as the 16th most influential Muslim in the world and also the sixth most popular world leader on Twitter, with more than 0.5 million followers on the social media platform.
‘The Muslim 500’ is a publication that ranks influential Muslim leaders and scholars worldwide. This is the 2020 edition.
The magazine stated that if ‘The Muslim 500’ was printed back in the year 1992, Imran Khan would have definitely been acclaimed as the Man of the Year then as well, having won the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Pakistan and running a successful fundraising campaign for a cancer hospital.
Not many people know that the sole reason for the establishment of a hospital was dedication towards cancer patients, and also was the loss of his mother to this disease in 1985. He even named the hospital after his mothers’ name, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, which was completed in 1994 in Lahore, Pakistan. Imran Khan gained immense popularity among Pakistanis both within the home country as well as within a large number of Pakistani ex-pats. A large percentage of its patients receive free care and facilities now.
Imran Khan became the 22nd and current Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2018 after devoting himself wholeheartedly, towards establishing a political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf under his presidency. The party was created with a notion of bringing about amendments and reforms, thus changing the very nature of corruption and mismanagement within the Pakistani political stream, with a slogan of “Justice, Humanity, and Self Esteem”.
Another prominent reason for this title is his sincerity towards building a peaceful relationship between Pakistan and India which would be helpful for both the countries in the long run.
