Prateek Kuhad, Indian singer, songwriter, and musician, has been signed by American music label giant Elektra Records.
Kuhad is famous for his independent music and has gained immense popularity and international fame over a short period of time, since the release of one of his 2015 debut albums, “In Tokens and Charms.”
He released the single ‘Kasoor’ recently, despite the fact that it was recorded last year. Talking to Hindustan Times, he said, “I did it my way, because there was no other choice.”
His efforts and consistency have earned him the privilege of becoming the first-ever artist signed from India to Elektra Records, which also has some of the most successful artists from the modern music and multiple Grammy Award winner and singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, Icelandic rockers Kaleo, and American rock band Young the Giant, on its list of records.
The news about Kuhad signing on with Elektra Records was publicized by the re-launch of his 2018 record-breaking EP ‘Cold/Mess,’ with the video being streamed online more than 10 million times on YouTube and also having over 10.29 million streams on Spotify. The song had also made it to the favorite music playlist of former US President Barack Obama in 2019.
“In Token and Charms” earned Prateek Kuhad an MTV Europe Music Award and Indie Album of the Year award from iTunes, besides several others. At the 2016 SXSW festival in Austin, NPR included him in their list of artists to watch out for.
He also sang for two Bollywood movies, in “Baar Baar Dekho” (2016), he sang the soothing ‘Kho Gaye Hum Kahan’ and in the Irrfan Khan-starrer “Karwaan,” he sang ‘Saasein’ and ‘Kadam.’
Elektra Records is an American record company, established in the 1950s, that has played an important role in promoting contemporary folk and rock music and has successfully recorded legendary artists such as The Doors, The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, and Jackson Browne. During the past few years, a number of renowned artists such as Metallica, Tracy Chapman, Phish, and Bjork have also been a part of Elektra’s roster.
