DissDash Presents Tune-in-Tuesdays With Monty Kataria | Episode 1

On today’s Tune-in-Tuesdays we look at some music video tidbits from the world of Bollywood, urban desi, and the global South Asian independent scene all creatively curated just for you! We talk about the music, the artist, some technicalities and help you judge for yourself whether you really need to give it your time on Youtube or not.

1. ‘Level Up’ – IKKA feat. DIVINE x KAATER

It has been some time that this track has been out but it definitely needs to be tuned in to! This Jamnapar, Delhi x Andheri, Bombay link up in the form of Ikka and Divine is literally LEVEL UP AF! IKKA and FAB entertainment showcase this monstrous feature with Mass Appeal India x Universal x Gully Gang Entertainment in a very progressive collaboration. From Ikka’s staying true to his Delhi roots to Divine’s gully wala swag makes LEVEL UP a very genuine DESI x INDIAN HIP HOP drop.

2. ‘Uchiyaan Dewaraan’ (Baari 2) – Bilal Saeed x Momina Mustehasan x Rahim Pardesi

‘Baari 2’ definitely gives you a romantic cinema vibe. It is slightly slower than the first but it doesn’t lack soul at all – if not, maybe, it has more.  This is Bilal Saeed all the way – Written, Composed & Directed by this man. This Sialkoti has had talent since his album “12” in 2012 alongside Dr. Zeus and it hasn’t faded now.  Momina is an absolute gem – whether you’re watching the video or just listening to the track.

3. ‘Kehnde Rehnde’ – Neha Bhasin

This is a big one and please don’t mistake it for some “female inclusion.” Neha Bhasin’s ‘Kehnde Rehnde’ is beyond a track. As its description suggests – it definitely is a sentiment.  The track and the video is as honest, straight up, and necessary as a song can be. Neha calls out the societally accepted and sometimes even pushed upon cultures of body shaming, gender bias, moral policing, trolling, and a lot more.

4. ‘Besharam Bewaffa’ – BPraak x Jaani x Divya Khosla Kumar

The pain and grief in BPraak’s voice to the honesty in Jaani’s music is absolutely phenomenal.  But ‘Besharm Bewaffa’ is something that the audience does not need to see over and over again. From violence to self hurt to women always going back to their so-called lovers and men stalking women and watching their each and every move.  Frankly, the worst character of the video is the most convincing – shoutouts to Gautam G – in terms of acting. Divya Khosla Kumar – attempted and failed.

5. Garage Billo – Mumzy Stranger feat.

DJ Lyan Mumzy Stranger is one of the few artists who has a career spanning over 15 years in the British Asian scene. From being one of the three finalists’ in BBC Asian Network’s Unsung competition in 2005 with his song Jump Up to releasing his second EP – 5 Reasons just a few days ago.  It is a South Asian aka DESI collaboration! A UK Bengali singing in Punjabi directed by a Gujarati and written by a Sikh 🙂
