DissDash presents Tune-in-Tuesdays with @MontyIsLive | Episode 10
On today’s Tune-in-Tuesdays we look at some music video tidbits from the world of Bollywood, urban desi, and the global South Asian independent scene all creatively curated just for you! We talk about the music, the artist, some technicalities and help you judge for yourself whether you really need to give it your time on Youtube or not.
Hip Hop/Independent
1. ‘Chicken Lemon Rice’ – Priya Ragu @priyaraguofficial
This is my first interaction with Priya Ragu’s music and I’m blown the f away. Priya Ragu goes ‘chicken lemon rice’ in her latest release and it’s the best chicken and rice you’ve had in a very long time – well not as good as Sammy’s Halal Food in Jackson Heights, Queens with extra white sauce and pita bread but you know what I mean! Lyrically and visually appealing – Chicken Lemon Rice has fun, color, language, love, and a whole lot of masala all over it 🙂 Born to Tamil Sri-Lankan parents in Switzerland after they fled from the 1979 civil war – Priya before ‘Chicken Lemon Rice’ was part of a family band with her father on tabla, brother on the keys, and her as the vocalist. Forward a few years down the line – with her discovery of Neo-Soul Music: such as Lauryn Hill, Brandy, India Arie – she’s been covered by the Rolling Stone and signed to Warner Music UK after rejecting 20 other labels. We gave Priya Ragu’s ‘Chicken Lemon Rice’ 3 1/2 winks and you can watch the official video on Priya Ragu’s YouTube channel.
Hindi/Bollywood
2. ‘Chhor Denge’ – Parampara Tandon
How does T-series do this? Week after week? And that too in the midst of a global pandemic?! The same storyline. Similar looking people with overdone salon trips that are sponsored. And again, only the vocalists are saving the show. ‘Chhor Denge’ – I think that’s how it is pronounced feels like a T-Series video that I reviewed last week and even the week before that – I think enough is enough 🙂 Nora Fatehi performs to this video with a not so familiar not so new newcomer Ehan Bhat who was seen in a forgotten film – 99 songs and a short film entitled “Bin Puche Aajana” – exactly my question – Bin Puche Kyon Aa gaye? Nora Fatehi is in a league of her own – I respect that – but I just can’t get myself to believe her in this particular video. Kudos to her on attempting and much respect – but pls stick to what you do best – not this. We give ‘Chhor Denge’ – Parampara Tandon 2.5 winks and you can Watch the official music video on T-Series’ official YouTube channel.
Urban Desi/Independent
3. ‘Zim Zimma’ – Ah Murda x Happy Singh x Stave Sonata
NYC-based Bangladeshi-American artist Ah Murda teams up with his counterpart Brooklyn-based producer Stave Sonata and this time they feature with LA-based artist – Happy Singh! With inspirations from Joyner Lucas’ ‘Zim Zimma’ off of Evolution – this is def. Is an interesting take. Smooth lyrical flow – legit Latino vibes – bop production – and some really dope visuals – shout out to Dedi Suseno! We give ‘Zim Zimma’ – Ah Murda x Happy Singh x Stave Sonata 3.5 winks and you can watch the official video on Ah Murda’s youtube channel.
Punjabi/Independent
4. ‘Gal Dil Di’ – Singga
This particular track and video is proof that Punjabi music made in Punjab – not the US, Canada, or the UK – is improving and that too heavily. Singga is a pretty common name in the Punjabi Music Industry and has fans and positive reviews all around. But, with ‘Gal Dil Di ‘ – his game has improved. Lyrics are simple – but not stupid – straight up. Tru Bande did a fabulous job with the visuals, lighting, and overall video. It’s a simple – easy breezy song – which is global. Not just stuck in the Pind. We give ‘Gal Dil Di’ – Singga 3.5 winks and you can watch the official video on Singga’s official Youtube channel!
Independent/Hindi/Bollywood
5. Yakeen – Shaan
I literally smiled out loud when I saw this on my YouTube feed. Shaan – THE Shaan back – and by himself – I mean independent – POP – am I going back to the 90s – what is happening here? I got super psyched – trust me. Then I started the music video …. And it’s NOT in HINDI – I mean I’m not complaining – but it’s in Punjabi – a Bengali singing in Punjabi whom I grew up listening to in Hindi – I am not complaining. BUT BUT BUT The same ghissi pitti story, music video, over the top, and dramatic video – why – kyon – ainj kyon karde ho mere veere? 2:10 – when Shaan comes in – ‘Chand sifarish’ automatically starts playing for me LOL And then the video does start picking up as does the track 🙂 The story is nothing out of the ordinary – but it isn’t that bad either – Cough (T-Series) We give ‘Yakeen’ by Shaan – 3.5 winks and you can. Watch the video on Singer Shaan’s official Youtube channel! – yes the name of the youtube channel is Singer Shaan 🙂

Not competent enough to sit idle and stare as the world goes by, Pallavi is optimistic to a fault and believes in building her world on her own rather than depending on others to make things right.
