Everyone was going ‘awww’ as the cute power couple Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards, we got another reason to celebrate. Riz Ahmed made Oscar history by becoming the first-ever Muslim actor to be nominated in the leading role category for the movie “Sound of Metal.”
LA Times gave us a piece of quick historical information that actor Mahershala Ali was the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar when he took home the award for supporting actor for “Moonlight” in 2017 and won the same prize in 2019 for “Green Book.”
Ahmed previously was the first Muslim, and first Asian, to win the lead actor award in 2017 Emmys for lead actor in a limited series or movie for “The Night of.”
In the “Sound of Metal,” Ahmed plays Ruben, a rock-and-roll drummer and recovering addict whose life is sent into a tailspin when he loses his hearing. For the role, Ahmed has been nominated for the Golden Globe, SAG Award, Spirit Award, and BAFTA for lead actor. He has already won the Gotham Award and numerous critics prizes for the same.
As per the Oscars official website, actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas (“The White Tiger”) and singer, songwriter and actor Nick Jonas (“Kingdom”) announced the Oscars nominations 2021 for all 23 Academy Award® categories in a two-part live presentation on Monday, March 15, via global live stream on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the Academy’s digital platforms—Twitter, YouTube, Facebook—NY and LA Switch pool ports and satellite downlink feed. The Oscars 2021 date is set for Sunday, April 25th 8e|5p on ABC, and it was announced that the 2021 Oscars will take place in both Union Station and the Dolby Theatre.
