Watching India’s Harnaaz Sandhu being crowned Miss Universe 2021 was a proud moment for all of us. The 21-year-old from Punjab, representing India at the 70th Miss Universe 2021, held in Eilat, Israel, brought home the crown, 21 years after Lara Dutta won the title in 2000.
Here are 5 things you need to know about her:
1. You Can Never Take The Punjabi Out Of Her
She is a proud Punjabi and wears her heritage on her sleeves. After she won the entire world was resounding with her ‘Chak de Phatte! Chak de India!.’ It was truly an indescribable moment and we loved all of it! Her mother awaits her return with the quintessential ‘Makke di Roti and Sarson da Saag’ treat.
2. Her Mother Is Her Idol
Harnaaz Sandhu idolizes her mother for breaking the rules of patriarchy to become a gynecologist. She grew up working with her mother at health camps addressing women’s health and menstrual hygiene. Deeply conscious of the privilege her mother’s struggles have gifted her, Sandhu today is a strong advocate for women’s empowerment, particularly their constitutional rights to education, careers, and their freedom of choice.
3. She Is A Believer In The Power Of Positive Manifestation
Her Instagram bio reads “Shine like the whole Universe is yours” and all her posts are filled with positive energy. Harnaaz Sandhu already felt like a ‘winner’ walking into the finals. She declared this on her social media with a post of herself praying at the Golden Temple, showing the power of faith and self-belief. What a remarkable attitude!
4. The Glamour Industry Has Always Been Her Favorite!
Harnaaz Sandhu began competing in pageantry at the age of 17 and has won titles such as Miss Chandigarh 2017 and Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018. In 2019, she won the title of Femina Miss India Punjab 2019 after which she competed in Femina Miss India. She was in the top 12 in Femina Miss India. She has also acted in a few Punjabi films.
5. She Can Mimic Almost Anyone Including Animals
Now that’s one thing we don’t hear of too often, and definitely not about beauty pageant winners! Sandhu actually gave her best impersonation of a cat on the world stage that earned her roaring applause from the audience.

Not competent enough to sit idle and stare as the world goes by, Pallavi is optimistic to a fault and believes in building her world on her own rather than depending on others to make things right.
