Will These South Asian Nominees Bring Home The Oscars?

The announcement of the Oscar nominations is again a time for us to scour through the entries for all the South Asians on the list. And voila! We are seeing a few names out there that have us excited! Will these South Asian nominees bring home the Oscars?

First off is the Indian origin documentary “Writing with Fire” produced by Delhi-based filmmakers, Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas nominated under the Best Documentary Feature category.

“Writing with Fire” has gathered several other accolades including the IDFA award and BlackStar Film Festival award. The film showcases the journey of India’s only newspaper led by Dalit women, Khabar Lahariya, from the generation of print to digitalization. If selected, it could be the first documentary by Indian filmmakers on an Indian subject to win an Academy Award.

The year 2022 has proven to be very lucky for the Bhutanese movie “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom”. Nominated under the Best International Feature Film category it is in a tough race against contenders from Japan, Norway, Denmark, and Italy.

Pawo Choyning Dorji, the director of the movie took to Instagram and said, “Today I am so very honored and proud, not as a filmmaker of an Oscar-nominated film but as a Bhutanese. The nomination of “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom” for Best International Feature Film is a historic first for Bhutan, a small but very special country with so much wisdom and compassion to share with the rest of the world.”

Our favorite British-Pakistani actor, Riz Ahmed, has added another feather to his cap with his “The Long Goodbye” being nominated under the Best Live Action Short category.

Besides the studio album, Ahmed has got other reasons to rejoice. As his Production, “Flee” under the directorship of Jonas Poher has become the first film in Oscars’ history to be nominated under 3 categories, Best International Feature, Best Documentary, and Best Animation.

Riz Ahmed expressed his gratitude towards his collaborators and followers with a heartfelt message on Instagram.
