South Asians Turning Heads – Met Gala 2022

An event of fashion extravaganza, the Met Gala 2022 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday was just as over the top as ever! But amidst the popular who’s who of Hollywood, our beloved South Asian stars did make a mark in this glitzy affair. Be it Mindy Kaling’s stunning lilac gown by Prabal Gurung, or Natasha Poonawalla spilling golden glamour in a Sabyasachi saree, the sartorial choices stood out. The Met Gala 2022 was titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” with the dress code for the big night as “Gilded Glamour.” Let us delve into the stunning representation brought out by South Asians.

Straight from a lilac dream, the “Never Have I Ever” director donned a thigh-high slit gown with purple floral additions on the shoulder. She stood out as she kept the look minimal with matching pumps and a diamond neckpiece fitting her plunging neckline. She hailed Gurung on her social media for bringing up his best stuff for her.

Indian businesswoman and socialite represented the country in a gold tulle Sabyasachi drape pairing it with a Schiaparelli bustier. She quite nailed the look for the theme, infusing desi glam with a modern touch. Embellished in beads, semi-precious stones, sequins, and printed velvet, her attire was an elegant amalgamation of extravagance. She brought in the right energy looking like a vision for ‘Gilded Glamour.’

Riz Ahmed

British-Pakistani actor and musician made quite a powerful statement by paying homage to immigrant workers through his garb. He wore a silk shirt and an undershirt, drawstring trousers, knee-high boots, and topped it with a Cartier necklace. He brought the reality of the exploitation of immigrants in the ‘Gilded Age’ to the red carpet.

Simone Ashley

Simone Ashley or more popular as Kate Sharma from the hit series ‘Bridgerton,’ made her Met Gala debut in a gold metallic bustier and a flowy black skirt. She looked fabulous in the Moschino ensemble, as she exuded the confidence to carry the trailing satin coat on the red carpet. With her hair styled slick and paired with a choker and earrings, Ashley’s take from Bridgerton Ball to Met Gala has left her fans stunned.

Prabal Gurung

Gurung is perhaps one of the all-time Met Gala red carpet favorites. His sustainable clothing label saw the likes of Camilla Cabello, Ashley Park, Denée Benton, Michelle Yeoh, and of course, Mindy Kaling donning his gowns. His name definitely scorched the red carpet this year!
