Our clothes define us even before we understand who we are. Pink dresses for girls. Blue shirts for boys. Skirts for girls. Pants for boys. But with evolving gender sensitivities and choices, clothing brands are being forced to reconsider how their labels are defined purely by gender. Putting his best foot forward to redefine the concept of clothing divided by gender, Tan France has announced the launch of his gender-neutral outerwear line, ‘Was Him’ launching mid-November this year.
The ‘Queer Eye’ co-host and ‘Next In Fashion’ judge has transformed people’s wardrobes and given their style a revamp. Tan France has been a part of some major brands in the past, designing and working closely with them until he decided to give up everything and retire at 33. But after he left, he found himself gaining popularity with his Netflix series that went on to become a household name. And now he’s back to designing with his new line along with brand incubator THMBL that adds style and aesthetics to outwear.
France offered a first look at the upcoming collection in an exclusive story with InStyle that starred himself alongside one of our all-time favorites, Lilly Singh.
The name of the brand is inspired by his middle name “Washim.” Growing up, France explained in a video on thmbl’s website, his classmates would take advantage of this play on words, and whenever something bad would happen in class, kids would point to France and say it “was him.” He wanted to take this “painful” memory and turn it into something empowering — thus, ‘Was Him’ was born.
The coats in the ‘Was Him’ collection tell the story of Tan France’s heritage and the life he’s lived. Drawing from his upbringing in England with British tailored coats and incorporating his South Asian background with embroidery details and bright-colored fabrics. Some coats feature equestrian-themed designs by none other than France’s longtime spouse, Rob France.
‘Was Him’ will be available for purchase exclusively on thmbl.com from mid-November. You can sign up for the waitlist now on thmbl’s website.
