‘Kalakars’ – Empowering South Asian Artists in American Film and Television

There are not many platforms for the South Asians that can help them disrupt the status quo in the film and television industry in the United States. But ‘Kalakars’ is one such up and coming non-profit venture which is striving to nurture the talent of South Asians Americans both on-screen and off-screen. It also serves as a bridge for connecting South-Asian artists with the American movies and TV Industry.

In Hindi, the term kalakars means artists and they are the essence of the organization. Founded in the year 2014 by a small team of filmmakers, writers, and actors, it has identified the requirement for a collective workshop environment in order to sustain developing stories by South Asians in the US. They have a reliable gathering of dynamic members who normally share their industry insights every month, offering resources and expertise.

Within a short period of time, this exceedingly cooperative process has built up a steady team that is endeavoring to raise the measures of storytelling. Fractured Atlas backs ‘Kalakars’ financially. The founders of the venture are Vishesh Sharma, GiriMohan Coneti, and Pulkit Datta, and Kamran Khan, Lipica Shah, Ami Sheth, and Adeel Ahmed form the committee.

Through various workshops, multiple aspects and stages of media/film creation processes are shared with the people. The quick growth comes from a genuine need that existed inside the network. The participants are excited to take part in the workshops, script table reads, production resources, masterclasses, and showcases. It is nothing short of an assurance to enable each other to succeed within the community.
